Stø Whale Safari Guide: What to Expect on a Full-Day Arctic Wildlife Tour
If you are planning a summer trip to Vesterålen and want to experience whales, puffins, seabirds, seals, and wild Arctic coastline in one day, our Stø Whale Safari is one of the most complete nature experiences you can join in Northern Norway.
This is not a short sightseeing cruise. Our Stø tour is a full-day Arctic wildlife safari, usually lasting around 6–8 hours, depending on the weather, sea conditions, and where the whales are that day. We travel from the small fishing village of Stø into rich feeding areas where whales may be seen, and we also visit the waters near Anda Nature Reserve, known for puffins, seabirds, and harbour seals.
In this guide, we will walk you through what to expect before, during, and after the tour, so you can arrive prepared, comfortable, and ready for a real Arctic day at sea.
What Can You Expect on a Stø Whale Safari?
On our Stø Whale Safari, you can expect a full-day guided wildlife tour from Stø in Vesterålen. The tour normally runs during the summer season from 1 June to 31 August and combines whale watching, seabird watching, seal watching, coastal scenery, and time at sea with our experienced guides.
You may see sperm whales, orcas, pilot whales, minke whales, humpback whales, dolphins, puffins, sea eagles, kittiwakes, razorbills, fulmars, and harbour seals. Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, but this area is one of the most exciting places in Northern Norway for marine wildlife.
Hot soup, coffee, tea, hot drinks, and biscuits are included on board. If no whales are seen, our Whale Pass gives you the chance to come back on another available tour, subject to availability.
Where Is Stø?
Stø is a small fishing village in Øksnes Municipality, in the Vesterålen region of Northern Norway. It is located far out on the coast, surrounded by open sea, mountain views, fishing history, and some of the most beautiful Arctic coastal scenery in the region.
Stø feels different from larger tourism destinations. It is quiet, remote, and deeply connected to the sea. For many guests, that is part of the charm. You are not just joining a tour from a harbour, you are starting the day from a real coastal village where fishing, weather, wildlife, and ocean life are part of everyday life.
Our meeting point in Stø is at Fiskeværveien 17, by the red building with whale paintings.
Why Choose Stø for Whale Watching?
The main reason to choose Stø is simple: the tour gives you more than whales.
From Stø, we combine whale watching with a broader Arctic wildlife experience. The route can include deep-water whale areas, open ocean scenery, seabird colonies, puffins, seals, and dramatic views of the Vesterålen coastline.
For guests who want a full nature day instead of a shorter whale-only trip, Stø is a beautiful choice.
This tour is especially good for:
- Wildlife lovers
- Birdwatchers
- Photographers
- Families who enjoy nature
- Couples on a Northern Norway road trip
- Travellers who want a slower, more complete Arctic experience
- Guests who want whales, puffins, and seals in one tour
The Stø safari is often described as a whale, bird, and seal watching experience and that is exactly how we want guests to see it. The whales are the highlight, but the whole day is part of the story.
A Full-Day Arctic Wildlife Tour — Not Just a Boat Ride
One thing we always want guests to understand before booking is that this is a real wildlife tour.
We do not go to a fixed attraction. We do not follow a guaranteed script. We travel into the natural habitat of wild animals, and every day is different.
Some days the whales are found quickly. Some days we need to search longer. Some days the sea is calm and clear. Other days the weather reminds us that we are in the Arctic. This unpredictability is part of the experience, and it is also what makes the moment of seeing a whale feel so powerful.
Our guides and crew use their knowledge of the area, wildlife behaviour, sea conditions, and recent sightings to give you the best possible chance of a memorable day.
What Happens on the Day of the Tour?
1. Arrival and Check-In in Stø
Your day starts with check-in at our reception in Stø.
We recommend arriving early and giving yourself enough time, especially if you are driving from another part of Vesterålen. The roads are scenic, but they can take longer than expected because of narrow sections, photo stops, weather, or animals along the road.
Please check your booking confirmation for the exact check-in time. As a general rule, we recommend arriving around 45–60 minutes before departure.
This gives you time to check in calmly, use the toilet before boarding, prepare your camera, put on warm layers, and ask our team any last-minute questions.
2. Guide Presentation and Safety Briefing
Before we board the boat, our guides give a short presentation and safety briefing.
This is an important part of the Stø tour. During the briefing, we explain what the day may look like, what wildlife we may search for, how the route can vary, and how to stay safe and comfortable on board.
We also talk about the nature of whale watching. Whales are wild animals, and every day is different. Some days we find them quickly. Other days we need to search longer. Weather, sea conditions, and whale movement all affect the tour.
This short introduction helps everyone start the day with realistic expectations and a better understanding of the Arctic environment we are entering.
3. Boarding Blasius II
After the presentation and safety briefing, we board Blasius II, our classic catamaran used for the Stø summer whale and bird safari.
The boat has both indoor seating and outdoor viewing areas. During the tour, many guests move between the indoor lounge and the outside decks. The outdoor areas are best for wildlife viewing and photography, while the indoor area is useful when you want to warm up, eat soup, or take a break from the wind.
Even in summer, it can feel cold at sea. The temperature in Stø may feel mild, but once we are outside the harbour and exposed to open water, warm clothing becomes very important.
4. Heading Out to Sea
After leaving Stø, we begin our search for whales. Depending on the conditions and recent sightings, the tour may travel toward Bleiksdjupet, also known as Bleik Canyon.
Bleiksdjupet is an important deep-water area off the coast of Vesterålen and Andøya. Deep underwater landscapes like this can attract marine life because of feeding opportunities in the surrounding waters. This is one of the reasons the area is important for whale watching.
Sometimes, when whales are active in the same search area, we may even meet our Andenes boat, MS Alba, which operates from Andenes. This can happen because both our Stø and Andenes tours may search overlapping waters when whale activity is concentrated around Bleiksdjupet.
For guests, this is often interesting to see. It shows how wide the whale-searching area can be and how our boats work in the same marine environment, even though they depart from different villages.
What Whales Can You See from Stø?
The most iconic whale in the area is the sperm whale.
Sperm whales are deep-diving whales that can spend a long time underwater before returning to the surface to breathe. When they surface, they may rest and breathe for several minutes before lifting their tail and diving again. For many guests, seeing the tail fluke of a sperm whale disappear into the sea is the moment they remember most.
Other species may also be seen, depending on the season and conditions. Possible sightings include:
- Sperm whales
- Orcas
- Pilot whales
- Minke whales
- Humpback whales
- Fin whales
- White-sided dolphins
- Harbour porpoises
Because these are wild animals, we never promise a specific species on a specific day. What we can promise is that our crew will do their best to search responsibly and give you a meaningful wildlife experience.
The Moment Everyone Waits For
There is a special feeling on board when a whale is spotted.
Sometimes it starts quietly: a guide points toward the horizon, the boat slows down, and everyone starts scanning the surface. Then you may see a blow, a dark back, a dorsal fin, or the shape of a whale rising through the water.
Guests often become very quiet during these moments. Cameras are ready, but many people also forget to take photos because they are simply watching.
That is something we love to see.
A whale encounter is not only about getting the perfect photo. It is about being present in the moment. Hearing the sea, feeling the wind, and watching a wild animal in its own environment.
Puffins, Seabirds, and Anda Nature Reserve
One of the highlights of the Stø tour is the visit near Anda Nature Reserve.
Anda is an important seabird area north of Stø, especially known for puffins during the summer breeding season. Around this area, you may also see other seabirds such as kittiwakes, razorbills, fulmars, shags, gulls, and sometimes white-tailed eagles.
For many guests, the puffins are a wonderful surprise. They are small, fast, colourful, and full of character. Seeing them in their natural environment adds something very special to the day.
We do not land on Anda, as it is a protected nature reserve and seabirds need peace during the breeding season. Instead, we observe respectfully from the boat.
This part of the tour is one reason the Stø safari feels so complete. Even after the whale search, there is still more wildlife, more scenery, and more to learn.
Harbour Seals
Around the Anda area, we may also see harbour seals resting on rocks or swimming in the water.
Seals are often easier to miss than whales because they can blend into the rocks and sea, but our guides know where to look. They are a lovely part of the tour, especially for families and photographers.
Like all wildlife on the tour, seal sightings depend on the day’s conditions and animal behaviour.
What Is Included on the Stø Whale Safari?
We want the Stø safari to feel like a complete Arctic day at sea, so the tour includes more than guiding and boat transport.
Included on board:
- Full-day guided whale, bird, and seal watching safari
- Experienced guides
- Hot soup with bread
- Coffee
- Tea
- Hot drinks
- Biscuits
- Indoor seating area
- Outdoor viewing decks
- Toilet
- Whale Pass if no whales are seen, subject to availability
The hot soup is especially appreciated after time outside on deck. Even in summer, a warm meal at sea makes a big difference.
What Should You Wear?
This is one of the most important parts of preparing for the tour.
Please dress for the sea, not only for the weather on land.
Even on a sunny summer day, it can be windy and cold offshore. Weather can also change during a full-day tour, so layers are always the safest choice.
We recommend bringing:
- Warm base layer
- Fleece or wool mid-layer
- Windproof jacket
- Waterproof outer layer
- Warm hat
- Gloves
- Comfortable shoes
- Warm socks
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Camera
- Extra batteries or power bank
- Water bottle
- Light snacks if needed
- Seasickness medication if you are prone to motion sickness
If you are unsure whether you get seasick, it is better to prepare before departure. Seasickness tablets usually work best when taken before you feel sick, not after.
Is the Tour Suitable for Children?
Yes, the Stø Whale Safari can be a wonderful experience for children who enjoy nature, boats, and wildlife.
Children often love the variety of the tour: whales, puffins, seals, seabirds, soup, and the feeling of being on a real Arctic adventure. However, parents should remember that this is a long day at sea.
The tour may last 6–8 hours, and conditions can be windy, cold, or bumpy. For young children, we recommend bringing extra warm clothes, snacks, drinks, and something quiet to do during waiting periods.
If your child is sensitive to motion sickness, please prepare in advance.
Is the Tour Good for Photography?
Yes. The Stø safari is excellent for photography because the day includes many different subjects.
You may have the chance to photograph:
- Whale blows
- Sperm whale tail flukes
- Dolphins or pilot whales
- Puffins in flight
- Seabird cliffs
- Harbour seals
- Fishing village scenery
- Open sea and mountain landscapes
- Arctic summer light
A zoom lens is useful for wildlife. We also recommend bringing a waterproof cover or dry bag for your camera equipment.
One practical tip: keep your camera ready, but do not watch the whole tour through the screen. Some moments are better experienced with your own eyes.
What Happens If We Do Not See Whales?
Whales are wild animals, and no responsible whale watching company can guarantee sightings every day.
If no whales are seen on your tour, our Whale Pass gives you the opportunity to join another available tour for free, subject to availability.
The best advice is to book your whale safari early in your stay if possible. That gives you more flexibility in case weather, sea conditions, or wildlife movement affect the tour.
Weather and Safety
The weather is one of the biggest factors in any Arctic boat tour.
Some days are calm and beautiful. Other days can be windy, rough, foggy, or changeable. Safety always comes first, and the captain makes decisions based on sea conditions, weather forecasts, and the comfort and safety of guests and crew.
Because of this, the tour may sometimes be delayed, adjusted, rescheduled, shortened, or cancelled.
We understand that this can be disappointing, especially if you have travelled far. But responsible whale watching means respecting both nature and safety.
Please check your email and phone before the tour in case there are updates.
Will You Get Seasick?
It is possible.
The Stø safari goes into open coastal waters, and the tour is longer than a short harbour cruise. If you know you are prone to seasickness, we strongly recommend taking preventive medication before departure.
You can also reduce the risk by:
- Eating a light meal before the tour
- Avoiding heavy alcohol the night before
- Staying outside in fresh air when possible
- Looking at the horizon
- Avoiding too much time looking down at your phone
- Taking medication before you feel sick
Many guests are perfectly fine, but it is always better to prepare.
Accessibility and Practical Limitations
Because this is a boat tour with steps, movement, narrow areas, and changing sea conditions, the Stø safari is unfortunately not suitable for wheelchair users or baby strollers.
Guests should be able to move safely on board with normal assistance. If you have reduced mobility or health concerns, please contact us before booking so we can give honest advice based on the boat and conditions.
Dogs may be allowed on summer tours, but only outside on deck and only when conditions are suitable. Please contact us before bringing a dog, as a full-day sea tour can be stressful for some animals.
Stø vs. Andenes: Which Tour Should You Choose?
Both Stø and Andenes offer memorable whale safari experiences, but they are different.
Choose Stø if you want a full-day wildlife tour with whales, puffins, seabirds, seals, soup, and a remote coastal village atmosphere.
Choose Andenes if you want a shorter whale safari from Andøya, with a stronger focus on whale watching and a more time-efficient schedule.
A simple way to think about it:
Andenes is ideal if whales are your main focus and you want a shorter tour.
Stø is ideal if you want the full Arctic wildlife day.
How to Plan Your Day in Stø
Because the tour is long, we recommend planning the whole day around it.
Avoid booking important travel, ferry connections, or accommodation check-ins too close to the expected return time. The tour duration can vary depending on weather and wildlife, so give yourself flexibility.
If you are driving to Stø, allow extra time. The roads in Vesterålen are beautiful, but they are not always fast. You may also want to stop for photos along the way.
Before departure, make sure you have:
- Checked your booking time
- Checked your email and phone for updates
- Dressed warmly
- Packed camera gear
- Taken seasickness medication if needed
- Arrived early for check-in
A relaxed start makes the whole day better.
Final Thoughts: Is the Stø Whale Safari Worth It?
If you want a quick boat trip, Stø may not be the right choice.
But if you want a full-day Arctic wildlife experience with whales, puffins, seals, seabirds, coastal scenery, hot soup, and knowledgeable guides, then yes — the Stø Whale Safari is absolutely worth it.
It is one of our most complete summer experiences and a beautiful way to discover the wild side of Vesterålen.
Come prepared, dress warmly, bring your curiosity, and give the day time to unfold.
We will take care of the rest.
