Whale Watching During the Polar Night in Tromsø: What Is It Really Like?
One of the first questions travellers ask when considering winter whale watching in Tromsø is surprisingly simple:
“If the sun doesn't rise, will it be too dark to see the whales?”
It is a reasonable question.
The term Polar Night sounds as though Northern Norway disappears into complete darkness for weeks.
But that is not what daytime in Tromsø actually looks like.
During the Polar Night, the sun remains below the horizon.
It does not, however, mean that the sky stays black for 24 hours.
Around the middle of the day, the horizon brightens.
Deep blue slowly replaces darkness.
The sky may turn pink, purple, silver or gold.
Snow-covered mountains begin to emerge around the fjords.
And somewhere in that changing Arctic light, an orca's dorsal fin may cut through the water or the blow of a humpback whale may suddenly appear against the mountains.
That is whale watching during the Polar Night.
It is darker than whale watching in summer.
It is different from a normal winter day farther south.
But it is absolutely not the same as trying to watch whales in the middle of the night.
In fact, the changing light can become one of the most memorable parts of the entire experience.
What Is the Polar Night?
The Polar Night occurs in places far enough north that the sun remains below the horizon for an extended period during winter.
Tromsø lies at approximately 69° north, well above the Arctic Circle.
According to Visit Tromsø's official winter guide, the Polar Night in Tromsø lasts approximately from 27 November until 15 January.
During that period, there is no conventional sunrise.
But there is still twilight.
Visit Tromsø describes winter days as having a few hours of light around midday, with the sky often shifting between pink, purple and deep blue tones.
That distinction matters.
No sunrise does not mean no light.
So Is Tromsø Completely Dark During the Polar Night?
No.
This is probably the biggest misconception we should clear up.
Imagine a normal sunset.
The sun disappears below the horizon, but the landscape does not immediately turn black.
Light remains in the atmosphere.
During Tromsø's Polar Night, something similar happens around the middle of the day.
The sun never physically rises above the horizon, but it gets close enough beneath it to illuminate the sky.
The result is a long transition between darkness and twilight.

This is the window when winter whale watching takes place.
How Much Light Is There in December?
The exact amount of usable light changes continuously through the season.
It also depends on:
- Your exact date
- Cloud cover
- Weather
- Mountains
- Your position in the fjords
- How far north the vessel travels
But we can use the winter solstice as a useful example.
On 21 December 2026, close to the darkest point of the year, astronomical data for Tromsø shows civil twilight from approximately 09:31 until 13:53.
That means even around the shortest day of the year, Tromsø has more than four hours in the brightest category of twilight.

The light outside that window does not instantly disappear either.
Before civil twilight comes nautical twilight.
Afterwards, the same process happens in reverse.
So the day feels less like:
dark → light → dark
and more like:

“The blue hour.”
That is convenient marketing language, but it is not completely accurate.
The light changes throughout the day.
There can certainly be periods when the landscape takes on the deep blue tones photographers associate with blue hour.
But there can also be:
- Pink light
- Purple light
- Brighter neutral twilight
- Grey overcast conditions
- Near-darkness early and late in the day
The entire day is not one continuous photographic blue hour.
A more accurate way to describe it is:
a long progression through different forms of Arctic twilight.
Can You Actually See Orcas During the Polar Night?
Yes.
Orcas are one of the primary species associated with Northern Norway's winter whale season.
They can be visible perfectly well during the usable twilight period.
Orcas have one obvious advantage for observers:
contrast.
Their black dorsal fins and white markings can stand out clearly against the water when they surface.
But finding whales is still wildlife searching.
The light is only one variable.
The crew also has to consider:
- Whale location
- Herring distribution
- Sea conditions
- Weather
- Visibility
- Whale behaviour
No particular whale species can be guaranteed on any departure.
What About Humpback Whales?
Humpback whales can also be encountered during the winter season.
The first sign may be a blow.
In cold Arctic air, a whale's exhalation can sometimes be particularly noticeable against the surrounding landscape.

- The back

- Feeding behaviour
- Several whales using the same area
Against snow-covered mountains and low winter light, even a relatively quiet humpback encounter can feel extraordinary.

Why Are the Whales Here During the Darkest Part of the Year?
The timing is not a coincidence caused by darkness.
The whales are here because of food.
During winter, huge concentrations of Norwegian spring-spawning herring gather in Northern Norway.
Orcas and humpback whales can follow these fish into northern fjords and coastal waters.

Tromsø is the departure point.

Why Leave Tromsø So Early?
An 08:30 departure might seem early when the brightest twilight comes later in the morning.
But this is precisely the point.
The vessel needs time to travel toward the whale-searching areas.
You do not want to wait until the brightest part of the day to leave Tromsø.
By departing while it is still dark or in early twilight, the vessel can use the journey north while the sky is brightening.
Then the most important part of the wildlife search can coincide more closely with the strongest natural light available that day.

rather than
start travelling only after the brightest period has already begun.

Fast-moving animals require relatively fast shutter speeds, and lower light forces cameras to work harder.

But what you lose in raw light, you can gain in atmosphere.

Photography Tips During the Polar Night
You do not need professional equipment.
Modern phones and cameras can perform surprisingly well in low light.
But a few adjustments help.
Prioritise shutter speed
Whales move.
The boat moves.
You move.
A perfectly exposed photograph is not useful if the whale is blurred beyond recognition.
For moving orcas or active humpbacks, a relatively fast shutter speed is usually more important than keeping ISO extremely low.
If you use a camera with manual or shutter-priority settings, do not be afraid to increase ISO to maintain a useful shutter speed.
Use wider apertures
If your lens allows it, a wider aperture lets more light reach the sensor.
Shoot in bursts
Whale behaviour happens quickly.
Several frames give you a better chance of capturing the moment when:
- A dorsal fin is fully visible
- A tail reaches its highest point
- Several orcas surface together
Keep the camera ready
The light may be limited.
The whale's surface time may be limited too.
Do not keep your camera packed deep inside a bag when the crew starts reporting wildlife activity.
Protect your batteries
Cold temperatures can reduce battery performance.
Carry spares.
Keep them somewhere relatively warm.
Remember the landscape
Do not zoom into every whale as tightly as possible.
The snow-covered mountains and Arctic twilight are part of what makes this experience different.
Sometimes a smaller whale within a spectacular landscape tells the story better than a close crop of a dorsal fin.
What About Phone Photography?
Phones can work very well, particularly for:
- Video
- Landscapes
- Wider whale scenes
- Group encounters
- Memories rather than technically perfect wildlife photographs
But digital zoom can quickly reduce image quality.
Instead of trying to fill the entire screen with a distant whale, consider capturing the whale within the environment.
An orca surfacing beneath snowy mountains often says much more about the experience than a heavily zoomed, blurry image.
And before holding your phone over the rail:
use a secure grip.

Can You See the Northern Lights During the Whale Safari?
Possibly—but do not plan around it.
The Northern Lights require:
- Darkness
- Sufficient auroral activity
- Clear enough sky
Early in the morning or later in the afternoon, it may theoretically be dark enough.
But whale watching and aurora watching are very different activities.
The winter whale safari is built around finding whales during the usable daytime and twilight period.
The Northern Lights are better treated as a separate evening experience.

If you happen to see aurora during another part of the day, consider it a bonus.

It creates additional challenges.
There is no reason to pretend otherwise.
Shorter usable light means the operation needs to be planned carefully.
Low light can make:
- Distant blows harder to identify
- Photography more challenging
- Small wildlife details harder to see
- Navigation and lookout work more demanding

Can Cloudy Weather Make It Too Dark?

A thick overcast sky reduces contrast and removes much of the colourful horizon light people associate with Polar Night photographs.
Snowfall can reduce visibility further.
But cloudy does not automatically mean impossible.

- Waves

- Wildlife location
- Safety
Sometimes the sky may be grey while sea conditions remain perfectly workable.
