Sperm Whales in Late Summer

The species most strongly associated with summer whale watching in Andenes is the sperm whale.

These enormous toothed whales use the deep waters outside Andøya as feeding grounds.

Sperm whales can spend long periods underwater while hunting. When they return to the surface, they normally breathe and recover before beginning another deep dive.

This creates one of the classic moments of an Andenes whale safari.

First, the whale is visible at the surface.

Then its back gradually moves through the water.

Finally, if the whale prepares for a deep dive, the tail may rise above the surface before disappearing beneath the Norwegian Sea.

Are There Other Whales Around Andenes?

Yes, although sightings of other species are less predictable.

Depending on natural movements and food availability, the waters around Andøya and the Andfjord may also bring encounters with:

• Dolphins
• Harbour porpoises

August Whale Watching in Andenes

August is a transitional month.

Early August still feels strongly like Arctic summer, with very long days and a busy travel season.

As the month progresses, the nights gradually become darker again.

For whale watching, the experience remains focused on searching the offshore feeding areas for sperm whales and any other cetaceans moving through the region.

One important difference for travellers is the sailing schedule.

Arctic Whale Tours normally operates additional afternoon departures only during the busiest part of summer, from July until around mid-August.

Later in August and through September, the regular 11:00 departure becomes the main option.

September Whale Watching in Andenes

September feels noticeably different from midsummer.

The midnight sun is long gone, evenings are darker and autumn begins appearing in the landscape.

But September is still part of the Andenes whale-watching season.

For visitors travelling outside the traditional July peak, this provides another opportunity to include a whale safari in a Northern Norway road trip.

The weather can also become more changeable as the season progresses, so flexibility is particularly useful.

Whale safaris depend on safe conditions at sea. Strong wind and high waves can lead to changes or cancellations.

If seeing whales is one of the main reasons for visiting Andenes, consider staying more than one night rather than building an itinerary that depends entirely on one specific departure.

Can You See the Northern Lights in Late Summer?

This is one of the most interesting differences between midsummer and the end of the season.

During the midnight sun period, the sky never becomes dark enough to see the aurora.

As darkness gradually returns later in summer, Northern Lights become possible again on sufficiently dark, clear nights when aurora activity is present.

That does not mean the Northern Lights are included in the whale safari.

What Else Can You Do in Andenes?

A whale safari may be the main reason you come to Andenes, but it does not need to be the only activity.

Late summer is a good opportunity to spend more time exploring Andøya.

Visit Bleik

The small village of Bleik lies south of Andenes and is surrounded by an impressive combination of beach, mountains and open sea.

Bleik Beach is worth visiting even outside the main summer period.

The coastal landscape also gives you a very different perspective of Andøya from the view you experience aboard the whale safari.

Explore Andenes

Take time to walk around the harbour, see Andenes Lighthouse and experience the northern tip of the island.

The town is compact enough to explore without needing an entire day.

Go Hiking

Andøya offers both short walks and more demanding hikes.

One of the best-known viewpoints is Måtinden, overlooking the coastline between Bleik and Stave.

Always check the weather and trail conditions before hiking, particularly later in the season.

Take a Road Trip Around Andøya

The western coast of Andøya is one of the highlights of travelling through Vesterålen.

Beaches, mountains, wetlands and small communities make the journey part of the experience rather than simply transportation between places.

What About Puffins?

Puffins are strongly associated with summer in Northern Norway, including the seabird colonies around Bleiksøya and other parts of Vesterålen.

But travellers visiting late in the season should not plan an August or September trip assuming puffins will still be present.

Puffins spend only part of the year at their breeding colonies before returning to sea.

If seeing puffins is a major goal of your trip, an earlier summer visit is generally more appropriate.

Late-summer Andenes should instead be marketed primarily around whales, coastal landscapes and the changing Arctic season.

What Should You Wear?

Never judge the temperature at sea by how warm it feels outside your accommodation.

Even in August, conditions on the Norwegian Sea can feel cold.

By September, warmer clothing becomes even more important.

• Warm base layers
• Fleece or wool mid-layer
• Windproof and waterproof outer layer
• Long trousers
• Warm hat
• Gloves
• Good footwear

Layers are useful because conditions can change during the same trip.

If you are prone to seasickness, consider taking appropriate preventative medication before departure according to the instructions or advice from a pharmacy.

What Happens If No Whales Are Seen?

Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed.

Is Late Summer a Good Time to Visit Andenes?

But late summer should not be sold as better than July.

Late August introduces sunsets and darker evenings.

September brings a stronger feeling of autumn while the Andenes whale-watching season continues.

The whales remain wild throughout all of these periods, so there is no month or departure where a particular encounter can be promised.
