But the whale-watching season in Andenes begins earlier.

May marks the start of Arctic Whale Tours' summer operation, and for travellers who do not need peak-summer temperatures or the busiest holiday atmosphere, it can be a very interesting time to visit Andøya.

1. Andøya Is Before the Main Summer Rush

July is one of Northern Norway's busiest travel periods.

May generally comes before that peak.

This can make the destination itself feel quieter, particularly on the roads, around attractions and in the smaller communities of Andøya.

That does not mean we can promise a lightly booked whale safari.

Passenger numbers vary by date, bookings and groups.

But if you prefer travelling outside the traditional July peak, May is worth looking at.

2. The Days Are Already Very Long

One of the advantages of visiting Northern Norway in May is the amount of daylight.

Even before the midnight sun begins, nights become extremely bright.

Later in May, the sun no longer disappears below the horizon.

This gives you plenty of time before or after your whale safari to explore Andøya.

You can visit beaches, drive along the coast or simply enjoy the changing Arctic light late into the evening.

3. The Whale-Watching Season Has Already Started

You do not need to wait until July to join a dedicated whale safari from Andenes.

Sperm whales are the main species we search for during the summer season.

May therefore gives travellers an opportunity to experience the same deep-water whale-watching environment that makes Andenes famous, but much earlier in the travel season.

Which Whales Can You See in May?

The primary species associated with whale watching from Andenes is the sperm whale.

The underwater geography outside Andøya creates deep-water feeding habitat relatively close to the island.

Sperm whales are extraordinary deep-diving predators and spend much of their time below the surface searching for food.

After a long dive, a whale returns to the surface to breathe.

During this period you may see:

• The whale's distinctive blow
• Its long back at the surface
• Several breathing cycles
• The animal preparing for another dive
• The tail fluke rising above the water

Can You See Other Species in May?

Potentially.

The waters around Andøya are used by several cetacean species.

Depending on natural movements and conditions, other encounters can include:

• Pilot whales
• Minke whales
• Orcas
• Dolphins
• Harbour porpoises
• Occasionally humpback whales

These species are less predictable.

You should not choose a May safari expecting that a specific secondary species will be present.

What About Pilot Whales?

Pilot whales are among the species that can occasionally create particularly memorable encounters around Andøya.

Unlike the sperm whales that are often encountered individually, pilot whales are highly social and can travel in groups.

How Are Sperm Whales Found?

Finding a sperm whale requires more than simply sailing to a point marked on a map.

The crew combines several sources of information.

These can include:

• Recent wildlife activity
• Visual scanning
• Whale blows
• Known deep-water habitat
• Sea and weather conditions
• Experience from previous departures
• Underwater acoustic information when useful

MS Alba is equipped with a hydrophone.

Sperm whales produce clicking sounds underwater, particularly when navigating and searching for prey.

When conditions are suitable, listening underwater can provide useful information about whale activity.

However, the hydrophone should not be thought of as a device that instantly tells us where a whale is.

The search still requires experience, observation and patience.

What Is a May Whale Safari Like?

Your trip begins at Andenes Harbour.

After check-in, guests board MS Alba and the vessel heads away from the coast toward the deeper waters outside Andøya.

As the vessel reaches the search areas, everyone begins watching the sea.

Sometimes a whale is located relatively quickly.

What Is the Weather Like in Andenes in May?

This is where expectations matter.

May is not guaranteed to have calm seas or stable weather.

Andenes faces the Norwegian Sea, and weather conditions can change quickly at any time during the summer season.

A May day can bring:

• Cold wind
• Rain
• Calm conditions
• Rougher seas

Sometimes several of these can happen within a short period.

That variability is normal in Northern Norway.

Can May Tours Be Cancelled Because of Weather?

Yes.

Safety always comes first.

Strong winds, high waves or other unsuitable sea conditions can result in a tour being changed or cancelled.

This can happen in May, but it can also happen in June, July, August or September.

There is no month during which the Norwegian Sea becomes completely predictable.

Is May Colder Than Peak Summer?

Generally, yes.

Even if the weather feels comfortable in Andenes Harbour, it can feel much colder offshore.

Wind exposure makes a major difference.

Dress for the sea rather than for the temperature outside your hotel.

There is no responsible basis for saying that a May departure automatically gives you better whale sightings than June, July, August or September.

Whale encounters vary from day to day.

The main reason to choose May should therefore be the overall travel experience, not the expectation of a higher sighting rate.

Choose May if you like:

• Early-season travel
• Very long daylight
• Cooler Arctic conditions
• A destination before peak summer
• Exploring Andøya outside July

Choose another month if warmest possible conditions or peak-summer atmosphere are more important to you.

Does the Midnight Sun Start in May?

Yes, during the latter part of May the midnight sun arrives in Andenes.

Before that point, the nights are already extremely bright.

This means your whale safari can easily be combined with evening exploration.

After the tour you might:

• Visit Bleik
• Walk along the coastline
• Photograph the evening light
• Explore Andenes
• Take a scenic drive around Andøya

As May progresses, the distinction between day and night becomes increasingly blurred.

If experiencing the full midnight-sun period is one of your main priorities, later May or the central summer months may suit you better.

What Else Can You Do Around Andenes in May?

A whale safari does not need to be your only reason for visiting.

Andøya is worth exploring.

Depending on weather and what is open during your travel dates, you can spend time:

• Walking along beaches

What About Puffins in May?

If puffins are an important part of your Northern Norway plans, remember that bird activity is highly seasonal.

Puffins return to breeding areas during spring and summer, but exact timing and visibility vary.

Andenes itself should not be chosen as a guaranteed puffin experience.

Andenes is exposed to the open Norwegian Sea.

That is a more useful answer than declaring one month the winner.

If your priority is sperm whale watching combined with a quieter early-season trip, very long daylight and the beginning of Arctic summer, May can be an excellent fit.

If your priority is peak summer, warmer average conditions and the widest choice of surrounding activities, June or July may suit you better.

If you prefer the returning sunsets and darker evenings, consider August or September.

That would not be an honest way to describe wildlife tourism.

Andøya is moving rapidly toward summer.

And out beyond the harbour, we are once again searching the deep waters for sperm whales.
